Leadership Ethics and Values
By Michael | May 28, 2009
“Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing”.
- Albert Schweitzer, German physician, musician, theologian, philosopher (1875-1965)
Dear Leaders,
Most of us aspire to be successful leaders. In the past two months we’ve shared PeopleTek’s 5 P’s of successful leadership (Passion, Persistence, Process (includes Planning), People, and Profit.
Now we’d like to share an additional perspective. Michael Lombardo and Robert Eichinger, authors of: For Your Improvement. A Guide For Development and Coaching highlight how ethics and values will help you be successful. They say:
Skilled leaders:
- Have thought their values through and are clear about them
- Have values that are in synch with those of their organization
- Exhibit consistent behaviors
- Reward appropriate behaviors and addresses those which are not
- “Practice what they preach”
- “Walk the talk”
- Live the golden rule – treating others as they would like to be treated
Leaders must also be authentic. That means being true to yourself and also means that you are willing to be vulnerable. It’s having the confidence and trust to:
- Share personal information
- Admit mistakes and short comings
- Be open about personal beliefs and feelings
- Be approachable and easy to get to know
- Ask others to share non work information
These items all help build relationships in a warm and trusting way. That in turn improves results. If you’re not already doing this a great way to start is by having everyone share something personal and positive at each staff meeting. Example:
talk about a recent vacation, a child’s accomplishment, a new addition to the family, etc.
Give it a try and let us know what you think.
Sincerely,
Michael W. Kublin and Jan Mayer-Rodriguez

“In my working life, I have found no greater satisfaction than achieving success through honest dealings and strict adherence to the view that for you to (profit), those you deal with should (profit), as well”.
- Alan Greenspan
Dear Leaders,
Business and competition is tough. The economy is impacting individuals, organizations and even entire industries. With the changing times, the role of a leader is also changing.
In the past several weeks we’ve talked about 4 of the 5 P’s of leadership; Passion, Persistence, People, and Process. Today the topic is PROFIT.
The role of a leader is more important than ever and the expectation is almost that “you must be everything to everyone”. First off, we need to know that’s not possible. What we can do however is be clear about our strengths and the strengths of our team members.
Numerous times we’ve shared the need to have a clear vision and meaningful goals that each team member can understand and support. You the leader must also define the work ethic and create your “dream team”. Having the right resources will enable you to get desired results and be profitable. You as the leader can also define hard work and core values for the entire team. You can:
Have a high level of integrity
Build trust
Establish best practices
Enhance relationships
Encourage networking across teams and organizations
Inspire and motivate
Know your customer needs
Stress innovation and take time to brainstorm new ideas and processes
Consistently reward and recognize based on successfully attaining goals
As a leader setting the work ethic, having a balance between work and home life, living a core set of values, and expecting no more of others than you expect from yourself will serve you well.
Wishing you success with the 5 P’s of Leadership and remember to celebrate your successes and be willing to invest in yourself!
Sincerely,
Michael W. Kublin and Jan Mayer-Rodriguez

Process and Planning in Leadership

The Leadership Journey
June 3rd
Session 1 of 12 is scheduled for kick-off
“Leadership is not a role, it’s a process involving how an individual or a group influences others toward a particular goal or objective. Leadership development occurs across one’s life span”. - Bruce Avolio, Ph.D.,University of Nebraska-Lincoln Global Leadership Institute program Director
Dear Leaders,
In the past few weeks we’ve been highlighting components of the 5 P’s of Leadership demonstrated by courageous leaders. The 5 P’s are Passion, Persistence, People, Process and Profit. This week’s topic is PROCESS (which also incorporates planning).
The Courageous Leaders we’ve observed have the ability to influence their teams or co workers to achieve a common goal, obtain results, and overall become a high performing unit. To ensure a high level of success leaders must::
- Be consistent
- Establish priorities
- Have written vision, mission and goal statements with the metrics to
track progress
- Ensure their staff has a clear understanding of their roles and how they
support the goals
- Communicate on a regular basis in differing forums ex. one on ones,
staff meetings, town-halls, email, newsletters
- Reward based on results that support the vision, mission and goals
- Accept and help others deal with change and conflict
- Strive to function in a proactive vs. reactive mode
- Evaluate individual performance by providing feedback and the
opportunity for growth
- Review and update development plans (both your own and those of
your staff)
In order to effectively lead your team to success you as a leader must help them understand how they support the “big picture”. Their goals and roles must be clearly aligned with those of the organization and used as the basis of rewards and development planning.
Accepting and leading through change can be very challenging. Courageous leaders help others understand that change is a must, and makes them aware of how the change will impact them and the organization; they also link ALL of their behaviors and actions to their vision and strategy.
Successful leaders build a plan and use it. We use the “brown paper process”.
This plan uses seven steps to help you easily identify where you are and gets you to where you want to be. For those not familiar with the plan the 7 steps are:
Step 1 – Agree on mission/objective
Step 2 - Agree on focus areas (we suggest 3 -5)
Step 3 – Agree on the desired result for each focus area
Step 4 – List the CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS (pre-requisites or dependencies)
Step 5 – Identify the ‘AS IS’ for each focus area
Step 6 – Brainstorm and prioritize the “HOW TO’s” for each focus area
Step 7 – Ensure accountability by assigning owners to each focus area
The key takeaway to remember is that effective and courageous leadership is a process, not an event, and planning leads to success!
Sincerely,
Michael W. Kublin and Jan Mayer-Rodriguez

Featured Leader:
ANNA KOLDYS
“Leadership is not so much about technique and methods as it is about opening the heart. Leadership is about inspiration-of oneself and of others. Great leadership is about human experiences, not processes. Leadership is not a formula or a program, it is a human activity that comes from the heart and considers the hearts of others. It is an attitude, not a routine”. - Lance Secretan, Industry Week, 10/12/98
Dear Leaders,
PeopleTek is pleased to award Anna Koldys with the Leader Of The Month Award.
When we first met Anna she was the Director of Pricing at Tropical Shipping. She was fairly new in the role and was working diligently on understanding and defining the role of her department as well as identifying strengths and opportunities for her department and her people.
Anna was not afraid of being vulnerable and admitting there were things that needed to be worked on. She has the the ability to come into a situation, analyze it, develop a plan to resolve issues and improve operations and then work with a team to make it a reality. She has been very successful using this approach.
Anna believes in developing her people. She has noticed areas of improvement and is not afraid to take steps to train, develop and coach her staff through the changes needed to improve. Anna relates the training to the actual performance and business results of the unit. She uses leadership concepts to drive the team to an even higher level of performance results, and stresses accountability by listening and ensuring there is a mutual understanding of all expectations.
Anna cares about people and is very dedicated to helping them be all that they can be. She holds people accountable and is willing to deliver the tough messages to benefit the employee and the company.
She understands her own preferences and is willing to overcome them when necessary to be successful. She is tenacious, and has great communication skills. She places a high value on the customer and is very loyal to Tropical Shipping. She balances this care of her people and customers with an eye toward the bottom line. She is always looking for opportunities for continuous improvement and to maximize profit.
Congratulations Anna!
Sincerely, Mike Kublin and Pat Pinera

Mark Chapman, Anna’s Leader says:
“Anna has really embraced her commitment to becoming an effective leader. This kind of true commitment inspires and attracts the people around her. She is very consistent, clear and courteous in her communications and always strives for her team to perform at their best, but she never asks more of others than herself. Anna has become a model of positive leadership.”
A team member says:
“Anna is a great leader and motivator. Anna has such a positive attitude towards the job, life and her surroundings that it picks me up every time I have a “low” moment. I still have a lot to learn from Anna when it comes to organizing the work-load and she is always available no matter how busy she is.”
RECAP OF Anna’s Leadership Success:
