Leadership Ethics and Values

By Michael | May 28, 2009

“Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing”.
- Albert Schweitzer, German physician, musician, theologian, philosopher (1875-1965)

Dear Leaders,

Most of us aspire to be successful leaders.  In the past two months we’ve shared PeopleTek’s 5 P’s of successful leadership (Passion, Persistence, Process (includes Planning), People, and Profit.
Now we’d like to share an additional perspective.  Michael Lombardo and Robert Eichinger, authors of: For Your Improvement. A Guide For Development and Coaching highlight how ethics and values will help you be successful.  They say:

Skilled leaders:
- Have thought their values through and are clear about them
- Have values that are in synch with those of their organization
- Exhibit consistent behaviors
- Reward appropriate behaviors and addresses those which are not
- “Practice what they preach”
- “Walk the talk”
- Live the golden rule – treating others as they would like to be treated

Leaders must also be authentic.  That means being true to yourself and also means that you are willing to be vulnerable.  It’s having the confidence and trust to:
- Share personal information
- Admit mistakes and short comings
- Be open about personal beliefs and feelings
- Be approachable and easy to get to know
- Ask others to share non work information
These items all help build relationships in a warm and trusting way. That in turn improves results.  If you’re not already doing this a great way to start is by having everyone share something personal and positive at each staff meeting.  Example:
talk about a recent vacation, a child’s accomplishment, a new addition to the family, etc.
Give it a try and let us know what you think.
Sincerely,
Michael W. Kublin and Jan Mayer-Rodriguez
