Career or Job?

By Michael | August 27, 2009

“Trust not what inspires other members of society to choose a career. Trust what
inspires you. From this decision alone will come over a third of your satisfaction
or misery in your life.
- from The Lazy Person’s Guide to Success

Today’s economic climate is positioning people to examine their professions and their dreams.  Companies are closing or downsizing and colleges and technical schools continue to produce graduates.

We’ve spoken with individuals of all levels and ages and work frustrations abound.
We were told by some that they didn’t want to be “pigeon holed” based on their
background or degrees, and others were concerned about selecting a position they
currently thought would be a good fit for fear they would be stifled in the future.

Seeking employment may be situational and these definitions from http://www.diffen.com/difference/Career_vs_Job.
distinguish a job from a career:

CAREER

A career is the pursuit of a lifelong ambition or the general course of progression
towards lifelong goals.

Usually requires special training.

A career may not mean stability of work as it encourages one to take risks.

Long-term.

JOB

Job is an activity through which an individual can earn money. It is a regular activity
in exchange of payment.

Education or Special training may or may not be required.

A job is “safe” as stability of work and income is there.

Short-term.

One is not better than the other; there is no right or wrong decision.  For those
seeking new work, it’s your choice as to which is the best fit for you now. And
that decision is certainly subject to change.

We spend a good portion of our waking hours at whatever our position is and how
we feel about what we do impacts us mentally and physically.  If you’re looking
for a change seek a position that you feel good about.  Explore job placement opportunities, complete  personality tests to assess your preferred options, and leverage your network and consider engaging a coach.

Remember, the ideal is to have a position that you’re a good fit for and equally
important is to ensure that it’s a good fit for YOU!

We’re here to help!

Sincerely,
Michael W. Kublin and Jan Mayer-Rodriguez

“Never continue in a job you don’t enjoy. If you’re happy in what you’re doing,
you’ll like yourself, you’ll have inner peace. And if you have that, along with
physical health, you’ll have more success than you could possibly have imagined”.
- Roger Caras

“Executive coaches report steady demand for their services despite the recession. Individual and corporate clients say the one-on-one counseling is critical for career success, especially during tough economic times”.
