Managing Stress Levels
By Michael | December 12, 2009
| “Much of the stress that people feel doesn’t come from having too much to do. It comes from not finishing what they’ve started.” -David Allen |
This time of year we frequently feel we’re on “overload” and as a result may experience stress. For some, stress is a motivator, for others it’s a detriment. The key is to recognize when we’re being stimulated and challenged versus being overwhelmed and non productive.
How are you impacted by stress? Does it cause you to be more focused and task oriented or does it cause you to be less productive? Last week we talked about the balance wheel; having balance helps keep stress in check.
There is no one single cause for stress and David Allen’s quote (above) points towards unfinished tasks being a major cause. Would you agree? Is your list of unfinished or incomplete tasks a major contributor for stress?
SUGGESTIONS:
Understand your priorities and focus on deadlines.
Write down everything you need to accomplish. During the holiday season this list is likely to be larger than usual as it will range from business goals and functions, to children’s events, to school assignments, to shopping lists, etc.
Eliminate non essential tasks. (Identify what can be postponed, passed along for someone else to accomplish, or even disregarded).
Be realistic about what you can accomplish and recognize dependencies.
Track your tasks and results. You will be able to better structure your day and celebrate your accomplishments.
Schedule time for you! Even if it’s only 15 minutes a day allow yourself some quiet downtime.
Wishing you a stress free holiday season!
Sincerely,
Michael W. Kublin

Passion Leads To Results
By Michael | December 3, 2009
Passionate action is a state of being that leads from your strongest feelings to constructive action.”
- Doug Gray (author, coach, speaker and leadership trainer)
Knowing what you’re passionate about and making the time to experience your passion is critical for success both personally and professionally.
Making the time and having balance can be difficult. Let’s look at the Balance Wheel and key questions written by Doug Gray in Passionate Action – 5 Steps To Creating Extraordinary Success In Life and Work.
Your wheel should consist of 8 parts:
- Personal Growth
- Significant Other
- Health
- Friends/Family
- Recreation
- Money
- Career
- Other (something critical and personal to you)
Now rate your level of satisfaction for each category on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being extremely happy and satisfied with that category.
How balanced are you?
What categories are you satisfied with? And those you’re dissatisfied with?
Your categories may not be balanced and don’t necessarily need to be. What’s important is that you recognize all imbalances and decide if you’d like to change the balance.
Here are some questions which may help:
What will this cost me if I do not change? Compared against:
If I make this change how might it improve my life?
What will I regret if I do not make a change? Compared against:
How might this change make me feel?
How are my familiar habits limiting me physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually? Compared against:
What else could I accomplish if I made this change?
What are my beliefs preventing me from doing physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually? Compared against:
How will my family and friends feel towards me if I make this change?
What is lost if I don’t make this change now? Compared against:
What is gained if I don’t make this change now?
These questions are worth investing the time to realistically assess where you are now and where you want to be. Re-visit your areas of dissatisfaction – were you just having a bad day when you rated each category or are there areas in your balance wheel you’d like to change?
You’re in control! What can YOU do to increase your passion, have a better balanced wheel, and improve results?
