Leading from Your Strengths” is both a workshop and a profile.

Through a quick and simple online assessment, you will immediately receive a comprehensive, objective, personal and motivating report, where you will gain tremendous insight into your natural strengths and how those strengths are operating in your life.

Your profile will specifically address your natural strengths in the way you solve problems, process information, manage change and face risk.

The Leading From Your Strengths Profile will provide an abundance of information and just by reading your report, you will gain insights into how you prefer to give and receive communication, and how you are naturally motivated according to the way you apply your strengths to your daily life.

4th QTR is Here – Are You Ready?

By Michael | October 15, 2009

“Effective leadership is putting first things first. Effective management is discipline, carrying it out”.
 Stephen Covey

It’s hard to believe we’re in the 4th quarter of 2009.  It’s certainly been an interesting year filled with challenges requiring adaptability, flexibility and resilience.

Now’s the time to take a pulse on both your successes and unfinished business. What have you accomplished this year? What has your organization accomplished this year?

Have you or your organization taken the time to recognize and reward the successes?   This could be from a financial perspective but may also be from simply sharing your successes with others (team members, support teams, business partners, your leader and the leader of those that supported the effort).

Recognition is especially effective if you can quantify the value provided (ex.  timeliness, accuracy/quality, cost savings, reengineered processes) and this information is extremely useful for annual performance evaluations.

Next is to identify the targets / goals that have been either missed or neglected.    All of our behaviors are intended to support our goals, mission, and vision.  Unfortunately we sometimes get derailed by responding to urgent issues, making them a priority over important issues.

As a reminder:

IMPORTANT issues contribute heavily to our goals and objectives and have high value.

URGENT issues require immediate attention but may or may not contribute to the success of meeting our goals and objectives.

After reviewing your goals, review your organizations needs for:
·         Talent retention
·         Technical growth
·         Leadership Development and Bench Strength
·         Relationship Enhancements

We also suggest identifying what you must accomplish before the end of the year, ensure that the individuals required are engaged and on board, and began to plan what you view as important for kicking off 2010. Don’t wait until 2010 to begin planning!

Tips to stay on track:

Invest the time to assess what’s important; you will almost always have sufficient time for these.

Start your day with the important tasks instead of the “fast, enjoyable and easy to accomplish” ones.

Distinguish between urgent and important; help your team and organization understand this and engage other leaders if in doubt.  (Or help them understand the difference!)

Don’t let the priorities of others replace your own top priorities; learn to say no firmly and tactfully.

Recognize that readiness levels and skill-sets may need to be developed and honed.

Be willing to invest the time and resources that will enable you to be a highly successful leader and have a high performing team.

We’re here to help!

Sincerely,
Michael W. Kublin and Jan Mayer-Rodriguez

Leadership and Follow Up

By Michael | October 9, 2009

“Most people don’t follow up very well, if at all. Good follow-up alone elevates you above 95 percent of your peers. The follow-up is the hammer and nails of your networking tool kit. In fact, FOLLOW-UP IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN ANY FIELD.
- Keith Ferrazzi

Do you consistently follow-up?  As a leader in an organization this could entail many things. You could follow-up on project tasks, goal achievement, new hires, promoted individuals and delegated assignments.

You can also follow-up with business partners, vendors, and acquaintances from your networking groups.  And, follow up includes process improvement ideas, cost saving opportunities, and progress against development planning.

In a leadership study of eight major corporations, Marshall Goldsmith and Howard Morgan found that the top rated item by employees for leadership effectiveness was “the ongoing interaction and follow-up with colleagues.  Leaders who discussed their own improvement priorities with their co-workers, and then regularly followed up” were also rated highly effective.

All eight companies had the common goal to determine the desired behaviors to ensure leadership effectiveness and arrived at the same conclusion: leadership interaction and follow-up were essential for success.  click here for entire article Another perspective for follow-up is from a marketing and sales approach.  How often do you meet someone new, exchange business cards, share business ideas and potential opportunities and then can’t recall their name or link the name to that “new opportunity”?

Keith Ferrazzi recommends following up within twelve to twenty-four hours after you meet someone new.

If you meet somebody on a plane, send them an e-mail later that day. If you meet somebody over cocktails, send them an e-mail the next morning.  He also provides the following tips for flawless follow-up:

Put the name and e-mail address of a new acquaintance in your database and program your calendar to remind you in a month’s time to drop the person another e-mail, just to keep in touch.

Remember-and this is critical-your follow up shouldn’t remind them of what they can do for you. It’s about what you might be able to do for them. It’s about giving them a reason to want to follow up.

 Always express your gratitude.

Be sure to include an item of interest from your meeting or conversation-a joke or a shared moment of humor.

Reaffirm whatever commitments you both made-going both ways.

Be brief and to the point.

Always address the thank-you note to the person by name.

Use e-mail and snail mail. The combination adds a personalized touch.

Timeliness is key. Send them as soon as possible after the meeting or interview.  Many people wait until the holidays to say thank you or reach out. Why wait? Your follow-ups will be timelier, more appropriate, and certainly better remembered.

Don’t forget to follow up with those who have acted as the go between for you and someone else. Let the original referrer know how the conversation went, and express your appreciation for their help.

Make follow-up a habit. Make it automatic. When you do, the days of struggling to remember people’s names-and of other people struggling to remember yours-will be a thing of the past”.

How effective are you with following up with your colleagues?  With new acquaintances?  How effective is your leadership team?

Rate yourself now and start making changes today!

 Sincerely,

Michael W. Kublin and Jan Mayer-Rodriguez

Organizational Success Requires Relationships

By Michael | September 24, 2009

“In organizations, real power and energy is generated through relationships. The patterns of relationships and the capacities to form them are more important than tasks, functions, roles, and positions”.
~ Margaret Wheatly

Organizations are only as successful as their leaders.  We’ve talked about maximizing collective strengths, understanding and appreciating each other’s differences, and having clearly defined vision, mission, and goals.  We’ve also talked the need for a successful leader to have courage.

A short recap is that leaders can not allow themselves or their organizations to be paralyzed by fear and to be truly effective leaders must:
§  Live ones dreams
§  Document and commit to personal and organizational goals
§  Understand ones strengths and the strengths of others
§  Communicate
§  Address conflict
§  Develop others
§  Delegate
§  Relinquish control
§  Reward and succeed
§  Build and develop new skills
§  Build and enhance relationships

The nature and speed of work that is required in today’s market does not lend itself to developing relationships or for allowing time to develop the necessary skills, but relationships are essential for achieving success.

The Center for Creative Leadership conducted a survey of 300 managers and executives from around the world asking if the definition of leadership had changed in the past five years.

84 percent responded that leadership had indeed changed, primarily due to having more complex challenges causing hardships for their organizations.  Interestingly, the flip side was that they were impacted positively by forcing greater collaboration, improving work processes and increasing work boundaries.

A tip to help you stay on target with building relationships and achieving results is the TRUST acronym:

T – Think
R – Relate
U – Uncover the needs
S – Sell the solution
T – Take action and close

This is a simple strategy frequently used by sales teams but may be applied to almost all industries.  Use it and you’ll be on your way to building (and sustaining) strong relationships!

We’re here to help you increase the success of your organization – contact us today!

Sincerely,

Michael W. Kublin

Creating Successful Organizations II

By Michael | September 18, 2009

“Teamplayer: One who unites others toward a shared destiny through sharing information and ideas, empowering others and developing trust.”
- Dennis Kinlaw

Successful organizations know that teamwork is essential to drive results.  Does your organization encourage teamwork? Do you personally and as a leader encourage and reward teamwork?

Last week we shared tips on what a successful team is and have been asked “what’s the best way to get started?”

The foundation is to have written (and communicated) vision and mission statements and supporting goals.

For those of you that have attended our Leadership Journey you’ve seen this before but it’s a crucial component for creating successful teams and organizations.

(Click here to find out more about the Leadership Journey)

For leaders and organizations to be successful, they must have:

VISION =
It’s a dream or aspiration that you as the leader have for yourself and your organization.  The vision provides direction and guides us to a place far away. It may be unattainable but we can try and focus our attention and make strides for getting there.

MISSION =
Represents what you are going to do and how you’re going to do it to carry out the vision for the organization. It makes the vision come closer to us; it brings the vision alive for us and makes it more personal. The mission begins to bring clarity to our vision.

GOALS =
Bring 100 percent personal clarity to your vision and mission. It requires ACTION.   Think in terms of what, when, and how the actions will be carried out, by whom and by when.

Goals must be “SMART”:
-Specific
-Measurable
-Realistic
-Achievable  (or actionable)
-Time-bound

Closely linked (and required) are roles and responsibilities.  Each team member must clearly understand not only their primary role but also the roles of others.  This does not mean roles and responsibilities are not shared, but rather that clarity exists regarding expectations and ownership.

And remember, ALL behaviors and actions both from individual, team and organizational levels must support and be aligned with your vision, mission and goals in order to achieve the highest levels of success.

We’re here to help you increase your team and organizations level of success – contact us today [mailto:mkublin@peopletekcoaching.com]

Sincerely,

Michael W. Kublin and Jan Mayer-Rodriguez
